The Orlando Road at Avondale Garden

Take the Tour

This garden is wrapped with a handsome Viburnun suspensum hedge which offers privacy from the outside and provides a green backdrop for a wide perennial border visible from the house.

The owners began gardening on the property 25 years ago when they planted the hedge that now encloses the garden and the allee of apple trees in the orchard on the western edge of the garden.

A mixture of colorful red and pink perennials enliven the terrace garden at the rear of the house garden. Pentas, abutilon, heliotrope, several species of salvia, penstemon, lavender, and hardy geranium attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. Several varieties of thyme encroach on the central walkway leading to a fountain which provides a focal point for this perennial garden space.

Near the steps of the terrace an attractive modern piece of red metal sculpture acts like a sentinel. Look down from this vantage point to view an interesting and restful gray garden. The peaceful colors of the plants combine with the sound of water from a central fountain and a striking blue metal sculpture highlighted against a white background make this a lovely garden when seen from the terrace as well as at ground level.

The swimming pool area is bounded by hedging and a mass planting of hydrangea which forms a striking reflection in summer of pink blooms in the dark blue water of the pool. The orchard garden contains citrus as well as the allee of apples and various species of lavender and iris. The orchard paths are designed with brick and decomposed granite. A few steps up from the orchard level bring the visitor past two lath houses to the rose garden featuring repeat bloomers like ‘Perdita’ and ‘Mary Rose’. The parkway strip of the garden provides a powerful testimony to the wisdom of landscaping with plants suitable to the Mediterranean climate of southern California. Don’t leave the garden without studying the very attractive Ceanothus ‘Yankee Point’.
