The California Boulevard Garden

Take the Tour

This landscape has a profusion of plants, broken concrete walls, and exuberant color combinations. From the first view you see colorful torrents of uncommon plants with little formality in the design.

The golden trumpet flowers of Brugmansia ‘Charles Grimaldi’ greet visitors at the front gate of the garden. In spring exotic pink bouquets decorate the tops of Geranium maderienses in a shady corner by the garden gate. Grasses sway with the slightest breeze. Plants all along its path encroach upon a curving ribbon of concrete driveway. The variety of both blooming and foliage plants demands that visitors move slowly through the garden. Color harmonies and blooming times have been carefully considered so groups of plants flower together to make a high impact.

On the west side of the drive, a carpet of purple viola with scattered white Iceland poppies stands in front of red amaryllis and red and white roses. The tennis court in the front of the house is like a large cage on which grow climbing roses and Thunbergia grandiflora. It is so covered in blooms that it hardly makes itself felt as an intrusion in the garden. Along the east border grow mounding masses of grasses, daylilies, salvias, and sedums. A raised bed of broken concrete in low walls curves along the edge of the drive near the house.

The area between the front of the house and the tennis court is a path of broken concrete, broad enough for plants to spill over the edges as they have done along the driveway. The climbing vines on the tennis court fence provide a backdrop for showy golden trumpet trees, Tabebuia chrysotricha, that are underplanted with alstroemerias, kniphofias and daylilies.

The back of the garden is dominated by a large rectangular swimming pool, but includes a shady pergola for climbing roses, a small raised lily pond to attract birds, and a garden of large concrete pots overflowing with succulents. The space left in the paving around the diving board for rosemary and other herbs softens the effect of the mass of pavement around the pool.
